Matt Everson serves as the Executive Director of Common Sense Institute Iowa, where he leads the organization’s efforts to advance data-driven public policy solutions that promote economic growth, opportunity, and prosperity across the state. In this role, he works closely with business leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to elevate evidence-based research and strengthen the public policy conversation in Iowa.
Matt Everson brings nearly 25 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, strategic communications, and advocacy at both the state and federal levels. Before joining Common Sense Institute Iowa in March 2026, he served as State Director for the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) in Iowa, where he led public policy and advocacy efforts on behalf of more than 12,000 small business members across the state.
Prior to NFIB, Matt Everson served as a government affairs consultant with Next Generation Public Affairs in Des Moines, where he advised clients across finance, healthcare, energy, and technology on legislative and regulatory strategies. He also held positions with Lone Rock Strategies and the National Association of Broadcasters, where he represented major television and radio broadcasters on key federal policy issues.
Earlier in his career, Matt Everson served in various roles in both state and federal government, including as Chief of Staff to the Minority Leader in the Iowa Senate, Associate Director of Operations in the Office of the Chief of Staff at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and Special Assistant to the Secretary and Advance under Treasury Secretaries John W. Snow and Henry M. Paulson during the administration of President George W. Bush. He also served in the United States Senate for Senator Gordon H. Smith of Oregon.
Matt Everson’s broad experience across Congress, the Executive Branch, state government, trade associations, and the private sector gives him a unique perspective on how public policy is developed, communicated, and implemented. He is widely recognized for his ability to build coalitions, navigate complex political environments, and deliver results through thoughtful strategy and trusted relationships.
Matt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Communication from the University of Portland in Portland, Oregon. He lives in Adel, Iowa, with his wife and two children.
